Three local factors stack:
- Pollen + mold load. KC's tree pollen season runs March–May and ragweed picks up in August. Mold spore counts climb after summer rain.
- Humidity swings. KC summers run high humidity, winters run dry. Older homes lack the envelope to buffer either.
- Aging duct systems. A 1960s ranch in Raytown or Shawnee often has metal trunk-and-branch ducts with degraded mastic, dust accumulation, and air leaks into unconditioned spaces — all of which act as a recirculation loop for indoor pollutants.
