Inside your air handler or above your furnace sits the evaporator coil — the cold half of the refrigerant circuit. Warm house air blows across it, the refrigerant inside absorbs that heat, and the coil normally hovers around 40°F. If the coil gets colder than 32°F, the humidity condensing on it freezes instead of draining away. Ice insulates the coil, which makes it colder still, which builds more ice — a runaway loop that can end with a solid block of ice, water damage when it melts, and a compressor ingesting liquid refrigerant it was never built to pump.
Only two things drive the coil below freezing: starved airflow (not enough warm air delivering heat to the coil) or low refrigerant (the pressure drop makes the coil run too cold). That's the whole diagnostic tree.
