Why your AC freezes up — and what to do before you call anyone

Why a machine that cools your house can freeze solid

Inside your air handler or above your furnace sits the evaporator coil — the cold half of the refrigerant circuit. Warm house air blows across it, the refrigerant inside absorbs that heat, and the coil normally hovers around 40°F. If the coil gets colder than 32°F, the humidity condensing on it freezes instead of draining away. Ice insulates the coil, which makes it colder still, which builds more ice — a runaway loop that can end with a solid block of ice, water damage when it melts, and a compressor ingesting liquid refrigerant it was never built to pump.

Only two things drive the coil below freezing: starved airflow (not enough warm air delivering heat to the coil) or low refrigerant (the pressure drop makes the coil run too cold). That's the whole diagnostic tree.

When it happens in KC — and the thaw-it-first protocol

We see freeze-ups across the metro from Olathe to Blue Springs all cooling season, with two spikes: early summer, when a filter that sat all spring finally chokes, and cool nights in the shoulder seasons, when running the AC below about 60°F outdoors drops coil temperatures on marginal systems. Whatever the cause, do this first:

  1. Set the thermostat to OFF for cooling, and the fan to ON. This stops making cold while the blower pushes warm house air across the ice to melt it.
  2. Give it time. A badly iced coil can take several hours to fully thaw. Running the AC again over a partial thaw just rebuilds the ice.
  3. Watch the condensate. Put towels around the indoor unit — melting ice can overwhelm the drain pan.

Never chip or pry at the ice. Coil fins bend with finger pressure, and a punctured coil turns a maintenance visit into a major repair.

Three airflow culprits you can check yourself

While the system thaws, work through the airflow side — these three cause most of the freeze-ups we're called for:

  1. A clogged filter. The number-one cause, full stop. Pull it and look: if you can't see light through it, replace it. Very dense filters — high-MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) pleated media — can also over-restrict a blower that wasn't set up for them.
  2. Blocked vents and returns. Closed supply registers and furniture parked over return grilles starve the coil the same way a dirty filter does. Open and clear them all — closing vents in unused rooms doesn't save energy, it causes exactly this.
  3. A dirty coil or failing blower. If the filter is clean and the vents are open but ice keeps returning, the coil itself may be matted with dust, or the blower may be weakening. Both live behind the equipment panels — that's tech territory.

How to tell airflow from refrigerant — and why one is not DIY

The field pattern is pretty reliable. Airflow freeze-ups usually appear suddenly after a specific cause — a filter that finally clogged, a return blocked during furniture rearranging — and stop once the cause is fixed. Refrigerant freeze-ups creep in: cooling gets gradually weaker over weeks, ice shows up first as frost on the copper line at the outdoor condenser, and the problem returns days after a thaw even with a brand-new filter.

Low refrigerant is never normal — the system is a sealed loop, so low means leaking. Finding the leak, repairing it, and weighing in the correct charge requires gauges, a recovery machine, and EPA Section 608 certification. It is illegal and dangerous to handle refrigerant without it, and simply topping off a leaking system is a bill that repeats every season while the leak grows.

What to do after the thaw

Once the ice is gone: replace the filter, open every register, clear the returns, and run cooling again. Why is my AC freezing up in the summer?

Two causes cover nearly every case: starved airflow (a clogged filter, blocked vents, a dirty coil, or a weak blower) or low refrigerant from a leak. Starved airflow is often a homeowner fix — start with the filter. Low refrigerant means a leak that requires an EPA-certified technician to find and repair.

How do I thaw a frozen AC unit?

Set the thermostat's cooling to OFF and the fan to ON. The blower moves warm house air across the ice and melts it, usually within a few hours. Put towels around the indoor unit in case melting ice overwhelms the drain pan, and never chip at the ice — coil fins damage easily.

Can I run my AC while it's frozen?

No. Running a frozen AC pushes the coil colder, builds more ice, and can send liquid refrigerant into the compressor — the most expensive component in the system. Shut cooling off, let it thaw completely with the fan running, fix the airflow cause, and only then restart it.

Is it normal for an AC to be a little low on refrigerant?

No. An air conditioner is a sealed loop — it doesn't consume refrigerant the way a car consumes oil. If it's low, it's leaking. Repeatedly topping it off without repairing the leak wastes money every season and lets the underlying problem grow. A proper fix finds the leak, repairs it, and weighs in the exact factory charge.
